Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:
Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.
Solomon wrote the entire book Ecclesiastes with the focus of reminding us that placing our hope and all of our energy into this world is vanity. He spoke of how all of it is a chasing after the wind.
I absolutely loVe how he sums up the book. He reminds us that the conclusion of the whole matter (of life) is to fear God and to keep His commandments.
In order to fear God we must know who He is. He is the Creator of the universe, He is the beginning of all things and the end. He is all powerful, all knowing, all wise. Those are just a few things about God that should lead us to reverence fear of Him. When we look at the character of God we should worship Him wholeheartedly in all truth.
We must fear God and also keep His commandments. His commandments are clearly laid out in scripture. He is gracious enough to give us access to His commands and to give us His Holy Spirit, who enables us to follow those commands.
This verse is giving me life today. My desire is to fear God and to keep His commands because this is my all and God is definitely worthy of my all- plus more.
